The religious leaders send spies among Jesus' followers to try to trick Jesus with complex questions. In this context and the turning of the tables, Jesus tells two parables about a vineyard and the wickedness of the religious leaders.

The parable of the two sons is about two sons. One is wicked, honest, and repentant and the other is religious, deceitful, and unrepentant. Which one did the will of the father?

The parable of the wicked vinedresser speaks to the love of the God, that would send prophet after prophet to Israel followed by his own son which would be rejected and killed. The parable was a condemnation of the religious leaders as much as it is a prophetic annotation of the days to come.

Jesus takes the shorter, but dangerous and questionable, route through Samaria on his way toward Galilee. He stops at Jacob's well, and encounters a woman. A woman, whose reputation was in question, but Jesus didn't care. Instead, he chose her to be the first converts (history records her name as Photine) in Samaria and one of the first Gentile converts in world history.

The last days of Herod are marked with rebellion. Even after his death, Herod Archelaus puts down a rebellion with three thousand causalities around the temple mount. Archelaus goes to Rome to confirm his appointment as king, and three other rebellions break out leading to another two thousand casualties and crucifixions alongside the Judean roadways as Rome restores order.

When it was time for Joseph and Mary to return from Egypt, their fear of Herod Archelaus was justified. Thus, they settled in Nazareth.

710 BC: Hezekiah's Revival

The story of Hezekiah is a lesson on how to radically change a country. Starting as regent or co-ruler with his father, Hezekiah begins by rebuilding Jerusalem's defenses and reestablishing Israel's army and commissioned engineers to start an engineering project.

Upon his father's death, Hezekiah introduced his spiritual reforms by reopening the temple doors, cleansing the temple and reinstating the worship of God. Sending out evangelists into the desolate region of Northern Israel, Hezekiah calls the entirety of the people of Israel back to God and to reinstitute all of the practices of David and Solomon. His riders make it to Ninevah and offer Jerusalem's treasures, but the treasures made no difference because Assyria had already invaded Aram and Northern Isreal. The invasion of Aram led to the end of the state of Aram and the submission of Northern Israel. All that remained of Northern Israel was the city of Samaria and other hilltop cities. In one last grasp for power, King Hoshea tries to play his cards but is called on the mat by Assyria's next king Shalmaneser V who invades and besieges Samaria.

The grand opening of Solomon's Temple was fantastic! When the Ark was placed in the Holy of Holies, the Glory of Lord began to fill the temple preventing the Levites from conducting their sacrifices. Beneath the Glory Cloud, Solomon steps up and prays for himself, his nation, his people and intercedes on behalf of his descendants.

Once Solomon has completed his prayers, he calls upon God to come and fill and rest in the Temple and God's response was fire from heaven that consumed the sacrifices and later Solomon's second encounter.

979 BC: The Suffering of David and the Messianic Psalms

Once Absolam goes to Hebron and declares himself king, his rebellion increases in strength and numbers and David has to evacuate Jerusalem. Upon his evacuation from Jerusalem, David and his court and his mighty men marched for two miles to and up the Mount of Olives. The two mile march is filled with weeping and mourning and prophetic symbolism.

In addition, the psalms written during or about this time period express the true heart of David. The mourning and sadness of the march combined with the prophetic gift of worship touch the heart of God to such proportions that psalms 22 and others speak of the future suffering of Jesus upon the cross and the forgiveness of all sins on the cross at Calvary.

979 BC: Absalom and the Spirit of Rejection

After Amnon's rape of Tamar, the Bible says that King David was furious, but it does not state he disciplined his son. The lack of detail implies King David did nothing, which fueled the hatred between Absalom, the brother of Tamar, and Amnon. After two years, Absalom killed Amnon to avenge the rape of his sister. After the murder of his brother, Absalom fled from Israel and is allowed back into Israel after three years, but not allowed to see the king for another two years.

Five years of not seeing his father and the rejection of his father led Absalom to full-blown rebellion. In this episode, we discuss the rebellion of Absalom and the spirit of rejection.

King David, the benevolent monarch, sits in his palace and declares these words: “is there anyone still left of the house of Saul to whom I can show kindness for Jonathan’s sake?” Then, David learns that Jonathan, his best friend, has a surviving son named Mephibosheth, who is lame in both feet.

Mephibosheth goes to the king assuming his life was going to end because he was the surviving grandson of the previous King Saul, but instead King David does something, again, that is way beyond his time and shows the heart of God towards his children.

Upon Ish-Boseth's death, all of Israel comes to Hebron to crown David king. Over 300,000 able bodied men arrive and bring him gifts and swear their loyalty to him. In Hebron, God fulfills the word that David would be king over all of Israel. In this episode, we discuss the arrival of David at this place of promise and purpose and after a three day party, he presents his soldiers with their first assignment - the taking of the hilltop fortress called Jebus, later to be called Jerusalem.

Before David can put a plan into action, he is commanded to return to Ziklag by the other Philistines who do not trust David.

Upon his return to Ziklag, a very large Amalekite army had overtaken Ziklag and had taken hostage the women and children of David's men and burned Ziklag. In this episode, we cover the detailed historical account of Josephus as David comes upon and surprises the Amalekites and fulfills the Lord's word to pursue, overtake and rescue the families and possessions and all that had been lost in David's season of fear.

Four armies are marching in the region of Israel. The Philistines have assembled to destroy King Saul and his army. David was called upon by King Achish to march with the Philistines. Saul assembled all of Israel to oppose the Philistines at Mt. Gilboa. In addition, there is a nomadic Amalekite army about to raid Southern Judea and Philistia, including Ziklag.

When Saul sees the hordes of Philistines, he is terrified and when he fails to obtain counsel from God, he calls upon someone to find a witch to help him. The result is Saul and the Witch of Endor.

Then, David and his men return to Judah and ask for provisions from a rich man named Nabal, who lived near the monument to Saul at Carmel. David, in turn, marches with 400 men to kill Nabal and the men of his household. Before David can get to Nabal's house, Abigail, the wife of Nabal, intercedes with her actions.

David flees to Gath, where David's life is threatened and he is thrown in prison. But, it is in prison and in Gath, where David experiences God's presence and deliverance.

When Saul noticed David wasn't at the feast, Saul flies into a rage and attacks his son Jonathan for protecting David.

In an emotionally charged moment, Jonathan and David say goodbye to each other at the Stone Ezel and David's journey takes an abrupt change of course.

In a fit of rage, as David was playing his lyre for Saul, Saul hurls his spear at David. David dodges the spear and flees to his room.

Saul orders David to be killed, but David escapes out of the window out of the palace of Saul and the protection of Israel into his wilderness years. We conclude this episode with a look at the concept of Christian contradictions and the upside down Kingdom of Jesus.

As the Israelites attacked, Saul made a vow, 'cursed be anyone who eats today, until I get my vengeance upon my enemies.' 1051 BC: The Battle of Michmash and the Courage of Jonathan

After the defeat of Nahash and the renewal of the kingship, King Saul dismisses his huge army and only keeps a standing force of 3,000 men. With his small army, he turns it west and attacks the Philistines. This violent act stirs up the Philistines and they show up in force with over 300,000 men. Saul and his army flee and hide and many surrender to the Philistines. Saul, in his fear and without waiting completely for Samuel, steps in front of the Levites and conducts a Levitical sacrifice to gain God's approval. As Saul completes the sacrifice, Samuel arrives. Instead of receiving God's favor, Saul, by ignoring God's law and disobeying Samuel, he receives God's judgment.

After the defeat of Nahash the Ammonite, Samuel calls the people to Gilgal. Here Samuel conducts 'his final address' where he steps down from his role as Judge and renews the kingship of Saul. In 'his final address,' he gives the people a history lesson, teaches them his three secrets to his walk with God and convicts the people for their asking for a king and God confirms it wondrously.

1052 BC: King Saul vs Nahash the Ammonite

A military power parks an army outside of Jabesh Gilead, a large Israelite town east of the Jordan, and their leader's name is Nahash the Ammonite. Nahash threatens to destroy the city, unless they surrender and allow him to gouge out the right eye of every Israelite. Word is sent throughout Israel and when Saul receives word of the threat of Nahash, the spirit of the Lord comes upon him.

When the spirit of the Lord comes upon him, Saul tears apart his ox and sends parts of it throughout Israel and threatens the people with their lives if they do not come to the aid of Jabesh Gilead. The response was fantastic: 330,000 Israelite men show up to fight for Saul. What follows is military brilliance on the part of Saul: he splits his army in three and leads them in a daring night attack to rescue Jabesh Gilead.

In fulfillment of prophecy, judgment was coming to Eli and his sons. The Philistines attack Israel and Israel loses four thousand men in the first day of battle. In a last ditch effort to save themselves, the Israelites bring the Ark of the Covenant in battle the second day. Instead of bringing them victory, thirty thousand Israelites die in battle with Hophi and Phineus and on the same day Eli dies and the Ark of the Covenant is captured by the Philistines.

While they were in Moab, Naomi's husband dies and her two sons marry Moabite women. Next, Naomi's two sons die and she is left with her two daughters-in-law. After the famine ends and Eglon is defeated, Naomi decides to return to Bethlehem.

On a road headed out of Moab, Naomi tells her daughters-in-law to leave her and go back to their people. Orpah cries and leaves Naomi, but Ruth clave to Naomi. In Ruth's defining moment, she doesn't allow Naomi's offense to overwhelm her faithfulness. She says to Naomi, 'where you go, I will go, your God will be my God, where you die, I will die…'

Ruth stays with Naomi and the rest of the account is her encounter with Boaz and redemption of their family.

1284 BC: Judge Ehud and the Word of God

All while the oppression of Israel continued under the rule of Eglon, King of Moab, God had a judge in mind who was fashioning and forging a sword for a political assassination which would overthrow Eglon. In an account filled with symbolism, Ehud arrives to pay tribute to Eglon, but instead assassinates Eglon with his double-edged sword in an upper room and escapes and blows a shofar and rallys Israel to assist him in surrounding Eglon's army and takes them down and frees Israel.

1290 BC: The Sodomy of Benjamin

After the death of Othniel, Israel's cycle of sin continues. Due to their unfaithfulness, God sold Israel into the hands of Eglon, King of Moab. Eglon subjugated Israel and oppressed the people. In addition to the oppression of Israel, a famine occurs which causes a man and his wife to flee from Bethlehem to Moab. The man's name was Elimelek and his wife was Naomi. After this, a disturbance occurs in Gibeah which results in the near destruction of the tribe of Benjamin.

1342 BC: Judge Othniel and his wife Acsah

Following the death of Joshua, Judah invades the land. Caleb offered his daughter in marriage to anyone who captured Kiriath Sepher. Othniel, the son of Kenaz, captured the city and received Acsah as his wife. Following the invasion, Acsah approached her father in a beautiful picture of women approaching the throne of God to ask for an inheritance.

Next, the cycle of sin begins and the first of the oppressions of Judges began with an invasion of the Arameans, who oppressed Israel for 8 years. After 8 years, Othniel was raised up as the first Judge who brought peace to Israel for 40 years.

1400 BC: Achan and Ai

After the fall of Jericho, The Israelites attack Ai and are defeated. After severe repentance, God reveals to Joshua that devoted things were brought into the camp. It was revealed Achan took devoted things from Jericho: gold, silver and a robe from Babylonia. Achan's action surrendered legal rights to victory in battle. In turn, Israel did some house cleaning and redevoted the camp of Israel to God. After dealing with their sin, Joshua led the Israelites in a complete envelopment of Ai and its total destruction.

Following specific orders, the Lord himself brings down the walls of Jericho. This episode covers the fall of Jericho and the abundance of grace poured out upon the sole survivor and her family from Jericho.

1420 BC: The Sons of Korah

In the previous episode, Korah led a rebellion against God and Moses. The consequence of the rebellion was judgment. The judgment included an earthquake, fire from heaven and a plague. The actions of Moses and Aaron saved the rest of the community. What we find out later is that Korah's sons survive this incident. Not only did they survive, but they testify to God's mercy and grace. Over four hundred years later, over 10% of the psalms were written by the Sons of Korah. This episode is dedicated to telling their story.

The Israelites finally made it to Cannan. Prior to invading the land, a spy from every tribe was sent to spy out the land. All of the spies reported a land of milk and honey, great fruit, giants, and walled cities. Joshua and Caleb responded in faith, but the other spies believe more in the fear of man, than in the fear of God. The result was catastrophic.

1439 BC: The Ten Commandments, the Law and the Tabernacle

During their stay at St. Sinai, God gave Moses the Ten Commandments and The Law. The ten commandments summarize all of the laws. Jesus revealed many years later, that God was interested in the heart and spirit of the law and he explained the full depth of the law and how impossible it was for man to fulfill it. Only Jesus was able to fulfill the law, whose length and depth covered the breath of human sin. Sin had to be atoned for. The law was given to reveal the power of sin, while Jesus came to give us authority over sin. Jesus came to atone for sin and empower us to live an abundant life.

1439 BC: The Encounter at Mt Sinai

After the Red Sea crossing, God led the Israelites to St Sinai. At Mt Sinai, God himself came down like fire upon the mountain and encountered the people. God's desire was to reveal himself to the nation of Israel and build a relationship and develop his purpose for them was a royal priesthood, but instead of drawing closer to God, they turned away from him and worshipped idols. While the people turned from God, Moses ran toward him encountering his glory over and over. Our revelation of God can only be in proportion to our relationship with him.

Moses was born to a Levi named Amram. Amram is a slave in Egypt and his people, the Hebrews are impressed slave laborers. The Pharaoh of Egypt is fearful of the multiplying and numerous Hebrews. Instead of recruiting them and incorporating them into his empire, he enslaves them and abuses them. He enslaves them and orders the death of their boys at the time of Moses birth. Amram wisely places his child in a small ark and drifts him into the direction of Pharaoh's daughter, who can't help but adopt Pharaoh as her own.

Moses is raised as royalty in the house of his enemy and lives there for forty years until he escapes to Midian. Josephus provides some questionable, but interesting history, of the missing years of Moses life.

This podcast is an account of his suffering and a summary of the philosophical and spiritual debates with his friends concluded by the words of God.
